Finding My Open Road: Lessons from The Millionaire Fastlane

April 13, 2025

In Chapter 36 of The Millionaire Fastlane, MJ DeMarco introduces the concept of finding your "open road" a path that aligns your passions, skills, and market needs to create a scalable business that leads to wealth. DeMarco emphasizes that wealth is not about following a predetermined path but about identifying opportunities where you can provide value at scale. This idea deeply resonated with me as I reflected on my journey as an L2 Support Engineer at NetOne Zambia and my broader aspirations in the tech space.

The photo below captures me in 2018, during my college years in Lusaka, standing in a library with books in hand. Back then, I was a student hungry for knowledge, devouring books on technology, business, and personal growth. It was around this time that I first read The Millionaire Fastlane, and Chapter 36 stuck with me. The idea of finding an "open road" inspired me to think beyond the traditional career path of getting a job and climbing the corporate ladder. I began to ask myself: How can I use my passion for technology to solve real problems and create value for others?

Fast forward to 2025, and I have applied this mindset in my work. One of my proudest achievements has been developing the Zambia Copper Prices Forecast Tool, a project that directly addresses a market need in Zambia’s mining sector. Copper is a cornerstone of our economy, and stakeholders need reliable data to make informed decisions. By combining my skills in Python, Streamlit, and data analytics, I created a tool that forecasts copper prices in USD and ZMW, as well as ZMW/USD exchange rates, for up to 30 days. This project was my "open road" a convergence of my passion for tech, my skills, and a clear market need.

Beyond my career, this philosophy has shaped my personal life. Traveling across Southern Africa, I have sought out ways to share my knowledge of technology with communities, advocating for its role in economic development. Each experience has been a step on my open road, teaching me to stay curious, identify needs, and provide value wherever I go. DeMarco’s lesson is clear: wealth and fulfillment come from building systems that serve others at scale. For me, that means continuing to innovate in tech, whether through tools like the copper forecast app or by mentoring the next generation of Zambian tech professionals. My journey is far from over, but I am committed to staying on this open road, creating value and growing along the way.
